The Best Homemade Thin and Crispy Pizza Recipe

This homemade thin and crispy pizza recipe should certainly make your mouth water!

Making homemade thin and crispy pizzas is definitely a firm favourite for us.  What’s better than a homemade pizza base with any or all of your favourite toppings and lashings of cheese.  You know when you’ve made a great pizza as soon as you pick up a slice, you smell that lovely pizza smell and the cheese oozes and stretches then gently breaks!   Have I made you drool yet?!

Pizza with salami is ready

We’re not a big fan of thick pizza bases it’s just too much dough for us.  What’s great with having a thin crispy base, is that they take no time at all to cook and you get to eat so much more as there’s less dough filling you up.  Just add your choice of toppings with a nice thin and crispy base …. perfect!

Using our easy homemade pizza dough recipe, the dough can be used straight away or you can place them in freezer bags for up to 3 months.  We also highly recommend using a pizza stone to cook your pizza on.  The pizza stone that we use is ideal for oven or barbeque use as it’s made of ceramic.  The heat from the stone gives a nice light golden brown colouring to the pizza base and a wonderful crisp when you’re eating it.

Put the oven on the highest setting to heat it up.  In the meantime prepare your dough by either rolling or using your palm and fingers to stretch it out and spinning to get that nice round shape.  I tend to place the dough on the pizza stone for the final stretch to make sure I get as much pizza as possible 😉

Pizza stone and pizza base

Remove the dough off the pizza stone and place the pizza stone into the oven for 10-15 minutes.  Having the oven setting at maximum will heat up the pizza stone nice and hot and cook you pizza as quick as possible.  Whilst the pizza stone is heating up, you can make our homemade tomato pizza sauce (recipe at end of post).

Fresh ingredients for the sauce

I may be a little biased but our homemade tomato sauce is delicious and there’s no cooking involved – however it did take a while to perfect.  So into a blender add the tomatoes, garlic, basil, oregano, olive oil, tomato puree, ketchup, balsamic vinegar (optional), sugar, salt and pepper.  Then, blend everything up into a smooth thick liquid (if too thick just add a little water).

Whizz up the ingredients for the sauce

Take the pizza stone out of the oven and quickly lay the pizza dough on top of the stone.  Then, place back into the oven for another 2-3 minutes to crisp up.  The pizza base should have a light golden brown colour to it but don’t worry too much as long as it’s crispy it will cook further later.  Now it’s time to layer on the tomato sauce you just made and spread it around.

Finely sliced red onion

With the toppings you can add anything you like or go crazy like us and add absolutely everything ha ha!  We do love caramelised onions as one of our toppings which adds a slight sweetness to the pizza.  Just add finely sliced red onions to a pan with some butter and oil and fry until they soften and brown.

Frying the onions

Some of our favourite toppings include chicken, salami, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, sweet red peppers, spinach and of course cheese.  The types of cheese we use for our pizza are parmesan, grated cheddar and mozzarella.

Overloaded pizza ready for the oven

Once you’ve added your toppings on to the pizza crust, place it back into the oven for around 8 minutes or until the cheese has melted and has a lovely golden colour.

Tip: If you like to add garlic or chilli oil to your pizza, then add the oils after cooking when you’re ready to eat – this helps stop the pizza base going soggy.

You don’t even need to transfer the pizza onto a plate, since the pizza stone will maintain the heat and keep your pizza yummy and warm while you dive in.  To get those perfect cut pizza slices, we use a pizza cutter.

Ingredients
  • For Your Homemade Tomato Pizza Sauce
  • 1 can Tomatoes or San Marzano Tomatoes
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 handful Basil - fresh
  • 1 tspn Oregano - dried
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Puree
  • 1 tbsp Tomato Ketchup
  • 1 tspn Balsamic Vinegar (optional)
  • 1 tspn Sugar - to taste
  • Salt & Black Pepper - to taste
Instructions
For the homemade pizza sauce:
  1. Add the can of tomatoes, garlic, basil, oregano, olive oil, tomato puree, tomato ketchup, balsamic vinegar, sugar, salt & pepper into a blender.  Blend till you reach a smooth consistency (if too thick just add a little water).

For the pizza:
  1. Turn the oven to the highest setting.

  2. Stretch the pizza dough ball to the size of the pizza stone.  Take off the pizza dough and place the pizza stone into the oven for around 15 minutes.

  3. In the meantime for the caramelised onions add olive oil and butter to a frying pan.  Once the butter has melted add the finely sliced red onions.  Fry till the onions soften and brown.

  4. After 15 minutes, take out the pizza stone and quickly place the stretched pizza dough onto the hot stone.

  5. Put the pizza stone back in the oven for 2-3 minutes, till the base turns crispy.

  6. Take the pizza stone out of the oven and spoon the homemade pizza sauce over the base.

  7. Add your favourite toppings onto the pizza base and sprinkle with your choice of cheeses.  Put the pizza back into the oven for around 8 minutes (depending on maximum temperature of your oven) or until the cheese has melted and turned golden.

  8. Take out the pizza and enjoy!

(Optional - add garlic oil and/or chilli oil to spice it up!)

I usually make homemade pizza once a week, but it’s never as thin as I would want it! I’ll definitely try your version, and the stone must make such a difference! On to my wishlist it goes =D

Wow that pizza looks incredible. We have a pizza night every Friday but I actually don’t own a pizza stone yet. Something I will certainly look into now.

Ever since I read your pizza dough recipe I’ve been wanting for this pizza one! All of those toppings sound so delicious, I don’t even like onions and I want some caramelized onions on my pizza now. San Marzano tomatoes are THE best! I can’t have pizza without those. Can’t wait to try out this recipe!

Caramelised onions make the pizza super yummy! San Marzano tomatoes really do make a difference too just be careful not to buy the fake ones. Hope you enjoy this recipe 🙂
